Junior Curling

DCC Junior Program

Since 1999, the Duluth Curling Club has a very active Junior program. We have three goals:

  1. Introducing young people to curling as a recreational winter sport
  2. Providing a venue for organized games between young curlers
  3. Developing the skills of existing young curlers who want to try for competitive excellence

“Junior” in curling means anyone not yet 22 years old.  The DCC Junior Program has programming for children as young as 9. In the past, DCC Junior teams have won state, national, and world titles.

Curling is a sport in which size, gender, strength, and speed are of no particular advantage. The helpful skills are balance, mental focus, and “touch”. In general, girls compete on an equal footing with boys.  Curling is also a very civilized game with a strong tradition of etiquette, consideration, and courtesy towards your opponents. Curling is a great way to meet people and make friends, while learning a sport you can play for a lifetime.

Anyone from the age of 9 to 21 is welcome in the Duluth Curling Club junior program.  The Junior fee is $120 per year.  Junior Curlers who wish to play on League teams will need to pay an additional $50 per year. For all junior members, the ice at the Duluth Curling Club facility is open for practice and pick-up games, any time that organized play or maintenance is not in progress. There are usually some younger people around after school hours on weekdays or on open weekends.

  • The Junior Program meets from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm on Tuesdays, plus time for cleaning of the ice and putting equipment away.
  • Our season runs from November – March.
  • Fee is $120 per curler. The fee covers use of all the necessary equipment and facilities, USCA-certified instructors,  and ice-time, plus subscriptions to the Curling Club Newsletter and the US Curling News, and entry fee for the Elizabeth Busche Memorial Junior Bonspiel, one of North America’s premier junior curling events.
  • Decc parking passes are available for purchase from the DCC office.
  • Junior curlers must be age 9 to 21.   Junior curlers who wish to play on additional league teams will need to pay a fee of $60. For all junior members, the ice at the DCC is open for practice and pick-up games, any time that organized play or maintenance is not in progress.
  • Junior Curlers, ages 10 and under, are required to have a parent (or other adult-arranged by the parent) present at the ice level during Junior Curling. The adult can be either on the ice or warm side of the glass.
  • Parents of Junior curlers under the age of 16 are encouraged to remain at the club during Junior Curling.
  • Please make checks out to the Duluth Curling Club. Credit cards are accepted in the DCC office.

The Junior Development Programchristensen11

In the past, DCC Junior teams have won state, national, and world titles. The “winningest” junior curler in history is a product of our development program, as were two of the MVP’s at the US Junior Championships in 2006 and a 2006 Olympic contender.  The 2007 US National Junior Champions, both Jr. Men and Jr. Women’s, were led by Duluth juniors. Our 2012 and 2014, 2015 Jr. Women’s team won Junior Nationals and  in 2015 the  Junior Mens team from Duluth won Junior Nationals, and both the Women’s and Men’s  placed 5th overall at the Junior Worlds.

DCC provides extensive support for its youth teams. Anyone willing to put in the long-term time, sacrifice, and effort to compete at their very best level is welcome in our Development program.
